The picture below was taken from a cliff and looks down upon the city of Toledo. It’s not an easy hike, but the view is worth it. This is one of my favorite spots in all of Spain, and is the home of one of my favorite legends.
If you look toward the center of the picture, you’ll notice an oddly shaped rock sticking up out of the cliff; it looks somewhat like a hook. The legend goes like this (or at least my host father’s version of it):
In medieval times, there was a princess who fell in love with a peasant boy. The king didn’t approve of the boy, so the boy decided to go to war to prove his worth, as well as protect the princess from any harm. He was victorious in all of his battles and came back home a hero. Upon his return, he found out the princess had been married against her will. He climbed up onto a cliff that overlooked the city so that he could always protect her. He never left this spot, and eventually his body transformed into the rock that now watches over the city.
I’ve searched the internet to find the original version of the legend, but I haven’t had any luck. Have any of you heard any variations to this? What are some of your favorite legends?
